How fantasy house names work
Most convincing house names are old place names: a feature of the land plus a word for a settlement or landmark. Ash + ford (a river crossing by ash trees), Thorn + wall, Raven + mere (a lake). Real English surnames formed exactly this way, which is why these names feel familiar without belonging to anyone.
- -ford: a river crossing
- -mere: a lake or pool
- -wick: a farm or trading settlement
- -combe: a narrow valley
- -shaw: a small wood
- -bourne: a stream
- -fell: a hill or high moor

Questions
Are these names taken from a book or show?
No. Names are built from old English place-name parts (like -ford, -mere, -wick and -wall) and nature words, so they sound medieval without copying any published setting. Always do a quick search before publishing a name commercially.
Can I edit the sigil?
Yes. Click "Open in Crest Studio" to change the colors, division, emblem and motto. Designing is free; $9 buys the print-ready files.
Does it work for guilds and knightly orders?
Yes. Switch the style to Guild, Order or Clan to get names like "The Emberwick Guild" or "Order of the Silver Key".
