How to play

  1. The defenders and their king start in the middle; the raiders start around the edges. The raiders move first.
  2. Every piece moves any number of empty squares in a straight line, like a rook in chess. Only the king may stop on the throne in the middle or on a corner.
  3. Take an enemy piece by trapping it between two of yours, in a line. A corner, or the empty throne, counts as one of yours.
  4. The defenders win when the king reaches a corner. The raiders win by surrounding the king: four sides on the throne, three beside it, two anywhere else.

The rules in pictures

Moving. Every piece slides any distance in a straight line, like a rook. No diagonals, no jumping.
Taking a piece. Trap an enemy between two of your pieces in a line. The trapped piece is taken.
Corners help. A corner, or the empty throne, counts as your piece when you trap against it.
The king escapes. The defenders win as soon as the king reaches any corner.
Trapping the king. Away from the throne, two raiders on opposite sides take the king. On the throne he needs four; beside it, three and the throne.
Phone and tabletTap a piece, then one of the dots. You can also drag pieces.
ComputerClick a piece, then a square. Or use the arrow keys to move the blue frame and Space to choose.

A board game from the age of the Vikings

Tafl games were played across the Viking world, and the Icelandic sagas mention hnefatafl by name. A wooden game board from the Gokstad ship burial in Norway has a tafl grid on one side and Nine Men's Morris on the other.

The clearest account of how a tafl game was played comes much later. In 1732 the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus recorded Tablut in the journal of his expedition to Lapland. Every modern rule set, including the one used here, is a reconstruction built from that account and from the boards that survive.

Questions

Is Viking chess the same as chess?

No. Hnefatafl is an older and different game. The sides are unequal: a king and a small guard against twice as many raiders, and the two sides have different goals.

Which rules does this game use?

The full Viking rules were never written down, so players use modern reconstructions. Here the king escapes to a corner, and he is captured by four raiders on the throne, three beside it, or two anywhere else. The two boards use the same rules.

What are Brandubh and Tablut?

Two members of the tafl family. Brandubh is played on a 7 by 7 board; small 7 by 7 tafl boards have been found mainly in Ireland, and the name is usually translated as raven black. Tablut, on 9 by 9, was recorded by Carl Linnaeus in 1732 during his expedition to Lapland.

Can two people play?

Yes. Choose Two players to pass and play on one phone, tablet or computer.
